Message from Simon:Goodbye, Goodbye

Well all things must come to an end and now it is the turn of this blog. As most of you who read this blog know, I am leaving Taif University to go and work as an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Language and Culture at Osaka University in Osaka, Japan.

I have really enjoyed my time teaching in Taif and have really appreciated the opportunity to work with the students in the Medical College: they have been amongst the best I have worked with in my professional career.

For now, as always, be good and happy. I hope all goes well for all of you in the coming years.

Dear Guys and Gals, as you might know, the details of the mid term exam are becoming clearer. They will, as you all should know, be held on Monday the 24th of October. and will seek to exam all four skills: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, Needless to say, in order to do each of these, you will have to know and understand the Grammar and Vocabulary that has been covered in each class.

To make sure you don't miss any posts, subscribe to the post by entering your email address in the space provided at the top of the column on the right hand side of the blog.

Specifically:

the exam will be worth 40 marks and comprise 20% of your final mark.
each skill [Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking] will be worth 10 marks.the Reading, Writing and Listening skills will be examined during the period set for the examination on the 24th of October,
the Speaking will be examined separately at a time and place organized between you and your teacher.

Dear Guys and Gals, I hope all is going well!! Sorry for the lack of posting on the blog lately. I have been waiting until I finished all the classes for Unit 3 before posting anything more. You will notice that I posted all the materils for Unit 3 yesterday , and the material for Unit 4 will posted half way though next week.

Over the next couple of days I will start posting the support materials for the previous units, i will also post re-worded versions of the Powerpoints for the Uits 1 and 2. The links will direct you to sites on the Web where you can practice some of the points that have been covered in the textbook.

Finally, just a reminder that if you need to contact me, you can always send an phone or send an email. The textbook for the first part of this course is entitled English 1A and it has been especially prepared for the students of Taif University by a team from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The first book will hopefully be available next week and will distributed free of cost.

There will be three other books for this course: English 1B, English 2A, and English 2B. I am not sure whether they will be free or not but, they will be available when the previous books are completed.

The books will start at what is commonly known as the Elementary Level and Conclude at the end of the Pre-Intermediate level. While the material in these books will appear to be very easy for at least some of you, we hope you will use the classes as a chance to consolidate the English you have learned up to now.

Welcome to the Taif University Medical English Page! The aim of this blog spot is to provide a means to supply you with resources that will be helpful during the course of your English subjects this year. It is also hoped that you will use it as a means to comment on subjects raised in the course and to also ask questions.

Among the things you will find on this blog are:

Dear Guys and Gals, Hope you are well and recovered from your exam today. Please find below a link to the exam paper today. I have marked the correct answers in yellow.

Please note that I have decided to accept both the answers for question 33 ['Ive got a bad cough'. 'You _______ smoke']. The answer is "shouldn't", but I can understand why some of you might think "mustn't" mght be the answer. All other answers are non-negotiable [including Question 2: sorry Sami...]

Please note that Ayana and I can not give the results for the final exams until the examination board of the College allows us to so please don't ask. We will post them as soon as we can.

[sorry, the two earlier version posted had a mistake. Question 10 the answer is 'C' and I will accept answers 'B' and 'D' for question 1 (even though 'B' is the answer for question 4)]

Dear Guys and Gals, I am having lots of questions about Lasagne and Poppadoms [there are different spellings for the latter]. Both are types of food.

Lasagna (plural: Lasagne) is a very wide, flat pasta (sometimes with wavy edges ). It is typically served in alternating layers with cheese, a sauce, and often other ingredients such as ground beef, sausage, or spinach. Typical of the cuisine of Italy.

Papadum, also known as papad in Norther India , is a thin, crisp Indian preparation sometimes described as a cracker or flat bread. It is typically served as an accompaniment to a meal in India.

Dear Guys and Gals, I have [hopefully] some good news for your. I know that many of you would only be happy if I not only gave you the questions in the exam but the answers also, the best I can do is tell you that:

- there are now only 40 questions
- 25 will be M/C with a choice of 4 options
- 10 will be M/C with a choice of 2 options
- 5 will be T/F

There will be no listening or writing but there will be a Reading passage. You will have an hour and half to finish the exam.

Dear Guys and Gals, i am just writing to let you know that the final written exam will be on the the 6th of June [I think]. It will consist of a total of 60 questions: including 10 listening questions. All questions will be either Multiple Choice or True/False and will cover the first 7 Units of the book.

I will provide examples of the questions you might expect to receive in the couple of days along with key words. If you have any questions please let me know by email.

Just a reminder that when preparing your speeches for next week that it is essential to make sure that the propositions you are arguing are STRONG.
For example, take the following topics suggested on the suite101.com website posted earlier this week:

Do schools have the right to search students’ lockers?

Should children be given sex education in schools?

Should the state fund schools run by particular faiths?

Should schools require their students to wear a school uniform?

Are beauty contests harmful?

In order to make these effective propositions, you need to replace the question words "do", "Should" and "Are" with the word "That":

That schools should / should not have the right to search students’ lockers!!

That children should / should not be given sex education in schools!!

That the state should fund schools run by particular faiths!!

That should require their students to wear a school uniform!!

That beauty contests are/are not harmful!!

Remember you will be trying to convinve your audience that a particular proposition is true. In order to do this you will need to make sure it is strong.

Practical Exam:Final Practical [Oral] Exam

As hopefully you know by now, the final Practical Exam will be held during your normal class time in two weeks and will involve you giving an 'argumentative speech' of two to three minutes length related to a topic of your course. You can talk about any issue you wish.

I will give you a lot more information about argumentative speeches over the two weeks but in brief they involve you trying to convince your audience that a particular proposition is true. Among the types of arguments you might want to convince your audience of are:
- that girls are smarter than boys
- that women should be allowed to drive cars
- that Riyadh is a better city than Jeddah
- that Asprin is better for headaches than Panadol.
- that students who get A+ should get paid more.

Exam Update:The Good News and the Bad News

Dear Guys, Gals & Abdul Rahman [who is still confused], Ayana and I have been conversing and we have some good and bad news.
On the good side, we have decided to accept the following alternative answers:
A:4 I had been waiting for hours..
B:9 You can walk in the park but you aren't allowed to skateboard or play football.
D:17 Oranges are being grown in the south of Spain.
D:18 A lot of people are being employed in marketing.
E:25 respectfulness [definitely a noun]
F:29 I was getting married last week..
G:38 Oh, we'll make coffee and biscuits at about eleven . [but you can't use 'make' again in the next sentence].
On the bad side, we are rejecting any of the suggestions made by Ziyad Al-Soqair and Saif Al-Talhi [just joking guys].

Exam Update:Why? Why? Why? 'Cuz! 'Cuz! 'Cuz!

Dear Guys and Gals, Hope you are all well. I am still getting some questions asking why the answers were the way they were. I am going to post a detailed Powerpoint on the weekend where I will go through each question. For now, however, I will deal with a couple of questions that have been causing most grief.
B: 7 Were you allowed to smoke when you were a teenager? You needed to write 'were' because we were talking about an event that took place in the past [ie. when the person being spoken to was a teenager]. This might be one of the questions we end up being flexible about.
B8. I had to get up very early yesterday morning. The answer we were looking for was 'had' but "couldn't" and even "could" also work so we will accept them as well.
C: 13. Doctors can’t / can learn to communicate with ordinary people. It's 'can' because "some teaching hospitals" would not "now train their medical students to have a good bed-side manner" if it was not going to have any effect.
D: 21 foreigner - foreign. Some students have been saying that this was difficult. We have however covered the word in class. One student asked whether 'foreignness' would be acceptable and as it is a word and a noun we will of course accept it.
D: 22 offensive offensive [we are marking all students correct for this one] A bit confusing, sorry. As a noun 'offensive' refers, amongst other things, to something an army / or opposition launches. If you have be listening to the news over the past couple of months you will have heard it a couple of times a bulletin. The adjective that goes with this version of the noun is 'offensive' [ie. the same word]. It is true however that offensive as an adjective does go with the noun offense which some of you may have been more familiar with.
F:26. She wasn’t very happy because she had had a bad day. the word is "had" because her unhappiness had happened in the past. It would be "has" in the first part of the sentence was "She isn't very happy because she has had a bad bad". We will however accept "has" just this once.
F: 29. I am getting married in a few weeks. Sorry, there is only one possible answer for this one, unless I am missing something.
G:B:33 Could you (33) book the conference room for a meeting for me? Book is the correct answer because the other option needs to be used elsewhere. We will however accept "arrange".
G:A:37 Right. I’ll (37) see to it straight away. "to see to" is a phrasal verb you should know [look here for the word 'see' and look down until you see the list of phrasal verbs] : and certainly a lot of you do. Ayana and I will think about what to do with this one once we have marked more papers.
G:B:39 Oh, we’ll need coffee and biscuits at about eleven o’clock. Can you arrange that? 'Arrange' is the correct answer. We will however accept 'make' and 'book'. In this section we will allow you to use either 'arrange' and 'book' twice even though we thought it was implied that you could only use each one once.

As I have mentioned to you before Ayana and will ignore questions where we feel students might have some excuse for making a mistake. We have already, for example, agreed not to mark incorrect the answers for question 22 and 23 and may agree that we will ignore [or accept other answers to..] a number of other questions.

Dear Guys and Gals, I'm still getting some emails from students concerned about the exam. My message to you all, as usual, is Don't Worry!! It's not worth it.

I speak from experience in this matter. The photo on the top of this a post, is a photo of me three years ago, about six months before I came to Saudi Arabia. The photo on the bottom , is me now, after two years of living and working in Taif.

Its a lesson in the dangers of worrying too much. Take it easy!!!

Dear 'Guys and Gals, I have had a couple of emails from students worried that there are exercises in the Work Book they don't understand. Don't worry!!. I realize that here are some questions in the workbook that are hard for you to understand: they are hard for me to understand as well.

I am trying to make sure however, that all the questions in the exam relate to grammar points that are fairly clear [no questions about the difference between 'will' and 'going to' for example]. As has been the case in previous exams, if there is a set of questions where lots of students make mistakes or it is clear they have been confused, we will mark them all as correct.

2. It will cover the first 5 units
3. there will be no listening activities in the exam
4. there will be no writing of paragraphs in the exam
5. the questions will relate mainly to the activities in the work book with some questions also related to vocabulary and everyday English usage in the Student's Book.
6. there will be 40 questions.

Dear Guys and Gals, Welcome Back to another semester. I hope this will be a better one for all of you. I will be away from Taif for the first four days [I am still in Australia] but I will be working away until I leave and online so if you have any questions please contact me.

This semester in Medical English 2 we will be using only one book namely New-Headway-[Pre-Intermediate] the 3rd edition. There will be original copies available for sale in the men's campus and Mrs. Faten will find out how best the girls on the women's campus can get copies. Please make sure you get the correct edition!!!!

For now, I am attaching pdf copies of the Student and Work books. Download them and have a look. You will however need to have hard copies for when work commences on them in the second week.

Dear Guys and Gals, I am being asked questions about what is worth what in the final marks. Just to remind you I am posting the Subject Outlines you should have all received at the beginning of the semester [I, at least, remember handing them out in week 1 to the guys...]

If you look, you will see that the final exam for the Medical English subject is worth 40 % of the final mark and the final exam for the Communication Skills [Grammar] class is worth 60 %.

Sorry for the delay in posting these. I have been in Jeddah pretending I am a human being [ie. someone who has weekends...].

Please find below a link to a copy of the exam paper with the answers on it. Please note that the exam has been marked by Faten and Muhib as generously as possible tso that there may be answers that have been marked correct that on are noted on the document supplied.
