Exam Update:Final Information About the Exam

Guys and Gals,

I am not sure why there is such confusion and why so many of you are panicking.

To ease you minds, let me tell you this:

There are two exams:

1. English for Medicine [aka. Medical English]

2. Grammar for Communication [aka. Grammar for Communication] -

******
1. The 'English for Medicine' Exam
is tomorrow and consists of 60 questions.

There will be 10 listening questions included in this 60.

- 5 of the listening questions will be on the Gallbladder and will be similar to those you do every week in the large lecture.

- the other 5 listening questions will be on another topic. The listening comes from the Powerbase book and will not be difficult - believe me.

Of the 50 other questions:

- the first lot of 25 [5 X 5 lots of questions] will be in the same format as the questions you do every week in class in the English in Medicine textbook and exactly the same format as the mid-term exam.

- the second lot of 25 [again 5 X 5 lots of questions] will be similar to the types of questions you can find in the Powerbase Study and Course books.

***********
2. The Communication Skills is on Tuesday and consists of 40 questions.

It is broken up into 10 sections with 4 questions each relating to the 10 topics covered in the Grammar section of Units 1 -9 on the Powerbase book. That is they will relate to:

- Questions & Answers;
- the Present Simple/Present Continuous;
- 'will' and 'won't';
- the Past Simple;
- Modals;
- Order of Adjectives;
- the Present Perfect;
- the Present Perfect/Past Simple;
- Time Clause; and,
- First Conditionals.

As I have said on countless occasions: work through the Grammar exercises in the Study Book and you will have no problems in the Grammar exam on Tuesday.

*********

If you have any other questions post them here.

Exam Update:Practical Exam: Online Medical Unformation Sites

As you know, for the practical exams will require you to talk for 2 to 3 minutes about a medical related topic. These might include, for example: a medical condition, a medical procedure, or a a drug.

Last year, I posted links to a number of medical on-line information sites. These are sites that are aimed at providing information for members of the general public about medical problems they might be facing; medical procedures and test they might be undergoing; and, hints about how to live longer and healthier lives.

Apart from providing you an insight to what patients may know about their real or imagined conditioned, such sites also often provide clear straightforward information about a wide range of medical issues.

As always however, it is always wise to check who runs these websites. While many are set up by Government bodies and/or Doctors associations, some are set up by drug companies and other interests groups pushing particular types of solutions for or, perspectives on medical problems.

Websites of this kind might be helpful to you in preparing for your practical exam!!

Exam Update:Communication Skills

The best way to study for the Communication Skills / Grammar for communication exam is to go over the Grammar Sections for each unit in the pages of the Study Book. It is also a good idea to have a look at the 'Grammar Extra' Sections of each of the 5 Review Units of the Textbook.

While I will be posting Poweroints of each in the coming days, for now, I am posting pdfs of each. I am also posting a copy of the make test that was done by the Men's section last Tuesday. This will give you a good idea of what the final exam will look like. Please note, by the way, the similarity of the Question on the make-Up Test and the Activities in the Study Book!.

Remember, the final exam will only cover the first 9 units of the textbook. There will be no questions on 'Second conditionals'!!

Grammar for Communication: Online ResourcesUnit 10: Second Conditionals

In Communication Skills / Grammar for Communication classes this week we looked at the Second Conditional. The second conditional is like the first conditional. We are still thinking about the future. We are thinking about a particular condition in the future, and the result of this condition. But there is not a real possibility that this condition will happen.

English in Medicine 1: Pratical ExtraUnit 8: Artificial Passenger

Artificial Passenger, the device mentioned in this weeks Practical classes is a real machine.

It is a telematic device developed by IBM that interacts verbally to reduce the likelihood of a vehicle operator falling asleep at the controls. The Artificial Passenger is equipped to engage a vehicle operator by carrying on conversations, playing verbal games, controlling the vehicle's stereo system, and so on. It also monitors the driver's speech patterns to detect fatigue, and in response can suggest that the driver take a break or get some sleep.

Exam Update:English in Medicine 1

A bit of extra information: The last three sections of the English for Medicine Exam are based on material from Powerbase. Some students are a bit worried about what they will be about and while I can't tell you the topics I can tell you that:

1. Questions 26-30 are "Fill in the gaps in the following conversation with the options provided" questions

2. Questions 31-35 are "Match the questions on the left with the answers on the right." questions and,

3. Questions 36-40 are "Use prompts to write down questions you might ask them." given a certain situation. [the situation might be something like: "You meet your Professor at Hyper Panda" and the prompt might be "What / you / buying/"

Hope that helps.

Exam Update:Grammar for Communication

Just a quick note to remind you that you will be doing two exams tomorrow, not one. The first exam will be in the English in Medicine exam about which I have already posted [see below]. The other exam is the exam for Communication Skills which is basically a Grammar Exam focusing on the Grammar Section of the first five Units of the Powerbase book.

There are three sections in this second exam and 25 questions.
i. the first section contains seven questions which consist of "correct the mistakes in the following sentences" questions e.g.

* I went to the exam early tomorrow morning.

ii. the second section contains eight "multiple choice" questions e.g.
* Abdul always _______ his sister to school.
a. drives
b. is driving
c. drove
d. drived

iii. the final section contains ten "fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb given" questions. e.g.
* I _____ that you should study too hard tonight. [not/think]

Hope that is a help.

English in Medicine 1: Exam Up DateSome Exams From Last Year

As you know, the exams are coming up and I know many of you are worried. My message to you however is: DON'T PANIC. It is not our intention to trick you. The exam will be fair and will be based on the work you have done in class.

As noted in class, the majority exam of the questions will be based on the English in Medicine Textbook [i.e. about 25 of the 40 questions] . A number of questions however, will be based on the exercises in the Powerbase textbook.

Please note that while the type of questions in the English in Medicine:1 part of the exam will be identical to those we have covered in class, the topic of the questions will not be. That is, you will be given a text that relates to a party of the body NOT in the textbook.

Please find below links to the sample and mid-term exams of last year. I have included a couple of Powerpoints that explain the answers. Do the exams first and then have a look at the answers. Please note that these exams DO NOT contain questions similiar to those in the Powerbase book because it was not used last year.

English in Medicine 1:Workshop ExtraWeek 6 / Unit 5 :Brands

One of the subjects focused on in this week's English for Medicine: 1 Workshops was Brands. As the citation on wikipedia.com notes, a brand is "the identity of a specific product, service, or business".

A brand, they note, "can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. The word brand began simply as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. A legally protected brand name is called a trademark. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity - it affects the personality of a product, company or service."
