Exam Update:English in Medicine 1

A bit of extra information: The last three sections of the English for Medicine Exam are based on material from Powerbase. Some students are a bit worried about what they will be about and while I can't tell you the topics I can tell you that:

1. Questions 26-30 are "Fill in the gaps in the following conversation with the options provided" questions

2. Questions 31-35 are "Match the questions on the left with the answers on the right." questions and,

3. Questions 36-40 are "Use prompts to write down questions you might ask them." given a certain situation. [the situation might be something like: "You meet your Professor at Hyper Panda" and the prompt might be "What / you / buying/"

Exam Update:Grammar for Communication

Just a quick note to remind you that you will be doing two exams tomorrow, not one. The first exam will be in the English in Medicine exam about which I have already posted [see below]. The other exam is the exam for Communication Skills which is basically a Grammar Exam focusing on the Grammar Section of the first five Units of the Powerbase book.

There are three sections in this second exam and 25 questions.
i. the first section contains seven questions which consist of "correct the mistakes in the following sentences" questions e.g.
* I went to the exam early tomorrow morning.

ii. the second section contains eight "multiple choice" questions e.g.
* Abdul always _______ his sister to school.
a. drives
b. is driving
c. drove
d. drived

iii. the final section contains ten "fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb given" questions. e.g.
* I _____ that you should study too hard tonight. [not/think]

Exam Update:Topic and Key Words

The topic of the reading passage for for the exam will concern the heart. Some of the keywords might include the following: amino approximately atria atrioventicular atrium atrium bicuspid calcium camel car cavity chamber consciousness death destination general glucose heartbreak love muscle not organ originates oxygen oxygenated potassium pump pumping raw red romance sadness seatbelts secretions smoking sodium specific spiderman tricuspid valve vena cava ventricle vital waste

English in Medicine 1: Exam Up DateSome Exams From Last Year

As you know, the exams are coming up and I know many of you are worried. My message to you however is: DON'T PANIC. It is not our intention to trick you. The exam will be fair and will be based on the work you have done in class.

As noted in class, the majority exam of the questions will be based on the English in Medicine Textbook [i.e. about 25 of the 40 questions] . A number of questions however, will be based on the exercises in the Powerbase textbook.

Please note that while the type of questions in the English in Medicine:1 part of the exam will be identical to those we have covered in class, the topic of the questions will not be. That is, you will be given a text that relates to a party of the body NOT in the textbook.

Please note that these exams DO NOT contain questions similiar to those in the Powerbase book because it was not used last year.

English in Medicine 1:Workshop ExtraWeek 6 / Unit 5 :Brands

One of the subjects focused on in this week's English for Medicine: 1 Workshops was Brands. As the citation on wikipedia.com notes, a brand is "the identity of a specific product, service, or business".

A brand, they note, "can take many forms, including a name, sign, symbol, color combination or slogan. The word brand began simply as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. A legally protected brand name is called a trademark. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity - it affects the personality of a product, company or service."

Sealand, the place mentioned in the first activities of this weeks Practical classes is a real place.

In the Grammar for Communication classes this week we looked at the future 'will' and 'going to.

As the people at englishgpage.com note: the 'Simple Future' has two different forms in English: "will" and "be going to." EIM Workshop Online Resources:Unit 3: Sylables and Word Stress

In the pronunciation exercise this week we looked the question of the number of syllables in words and word stress. This is, as we found, an important issue if one wants to be understood.

While not always essential, making sure that one utters the correct number of syllables in a word and puts the stress on the correct syllable [if there is more than one, can make all the difference between being understood or not.
