English in Medicine 1:Workshop ExtraWeek 5 / Unit4 :Sealand

Sealand, the place mentioned in the first activities of this weeks Practical classes is a real place.

The Principality of Sealand, as it is formally known, an unrecognized micronation, located on HM Fort Roughs, a former World War II Maunsell Sea Fort in the North Sea 10 km (six miles) off the coast of Suffolk, England (51°53'40"N, 1°28'57"E). See here.

Grammar for Communication: Online ResourcesWeek 4 / Unit 3: The Futue 'will' and 'going to'

In the Grammar for Communication classes this week we looked at the future 'will' and 'going to.

As the people at englishgpage.com note: the 'Simple Future' has two different forms in English: "will" and "be going to." Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. ...Both "will" and "be going to" refer to a specific time in the future.

EIM Workshop Online Resources:Unit 3: Sylables and Word Stress

In the pronunciation exercise this week we looked the question of the number of syllables in words and word stress. This is, as we found, an important issue if one wants to be understood.

While not always essential, making sure that one utters the correct number of syllables in a word and puts the stress on the correct syllable [if there is more than one, can make all the difference between being understood or not. There are lost of resources on the web to help you improve your knowledge of Medical Terminology. Over the next couple of weeks I'll try and post information about a number sites that are worth exploring.

One site with a number of exercises is Quia.com. According to their website, Quia is a "... in online education". The web sites says that ".. helps students learn more by bringing the resources of hundreds of thousands of educators together in one place".

Textbooks - Medical English 1:English for Medicine: 1

Just a quick note to let you know that [at last] the abridged and edited version of Dr. Chaudrey's book English for Medicine is now available for purchase at Al Maseef in its color [although I gather, if you ask them for a [cheaper] black and white version they will be happy to produce one for you.

Cheaper black and white versions will be available at the boys college from Saturday. I will see what I can do about getting copies to buy at the women's campus.
