New English File Online is a website hosted for English language students by Oxford University Press. You can learn more English here with interactive exercises, useful downloads, games, and weblinks. Practise your grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, and reading, and have some fun too.

There are different sets of pages for pages for Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and Advanced and Grammar ,and within each level linksto Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Practical English and 'How Words Work activivities along with Learning Records , Text Builders and Weblinks .

English Online Resources:www.usalearns.org

U.S.A. Learns (www.usalearns.org) is a free ESL instructional program developed primarily for immigrant adults with limited English language skills who cannot attend traditional classroom programs because of difficulty with schedules, transportation, or other barriers.

The site was developed by the Sacramento County Office of Education in partnership with the University of Michigan, and is based on greatly expanded curriculum from Putting English to Work I, English for All, and the California Distance Learning Project Web site.

The U.S.A. Learns Web site consists of 3 unique programs:
- First English Course – 20 video-based, beginner-level units,
- Second English Course – 17 video-based, intermediate-level units, and
- Practice English and Reading – 42 intermediate-level stories and activities.

Medical Online Resources:HealthProfessionals.com

HealthProfessionals.com is a website that aims to be "a quick, free, easy, and complete reference guide of medical professions and the schools across the USA that offer the courses necessary to obtain these careers."

You can look up any of the listed medical careers and find out their roles and responsibilities, average salaries, educational requirements, and associated affiliations with your career option. They also have links to obtain quality medical equipment, books and uniforms online.

Subject Resources:Textbook: Unit 1 / Parts 1-3

As noted previously, the textbook for this semester is English for Medicine: Part 2 by our very own Prof Chaudrey Zahid Javid. Unfortunately the book is currently not finished yet as a decision was made to make some changes to it based on feedback we received from students about it last semester.

As a result, for the next couple of weeks, I will be posting pdf versions of the sections of the Chapters to be covered here on the blog. Copies will also be available in your various photo copy sections before class hopefully [guys, the photocopy section already has copies]. Please, therefore, find copies of links to pdf versions on Sections 1-3 of Unit 1 of the textbook which will focus on the Respiratory System.

Message from Simon:Welcome Back!!

Dear Gals & Guys, Welcome Back!! I know it was not a particularly long break but I hope you are reasonably rested and ready to get back in to studying. I want to also partocularly welcome the students from the woman's college who I am hoping will become more regular users of the blog this semester. English Online Resources:EnglishClub.com

EnglishClub.com is a Web site that helps English learners and teachers by providing useful resources such as Web-based lessons, quizzes, games, forum, chat, and blogs. This Web site consists of five sections: Learn English, Teach English, ESL Resources, ESL World, and My EnglishClub. Each section provides several sub-sections with rich learning and teaching activities and resources. In the grammar section, for example, learners can read the explanations on verbs and then take verb quizzes if they want.

An interesting feature of the site is the The Learning English Video Project which consists [so far] of 7 documentaries filmed in 7 countries: Morocco, Romania, USA, Spain, China, Brazil, UK each of which deal with questions such as "Why are people learning English?" and "What tips and advice can learners offer?" In the film on Morocco, for example, staff and learners discuss the advantages and challenges of English language learning in Morocco. Interviewees touch on a variety of topics including British vs. American accents, multi-level classrooms, and the similarities of English to French and Spanish.

BreakingNewsEnglish.com is a web site that offers free Englisdh lessons every three or so days. All lessons are based on stories currently in the news -and are also downloadable in Word.doc and PDF formats.

Most of the lesson plans have vocabulary exercises and discussion exercises as well as reading and listening. The material is for intermediate and above students. and the lessons based dealing with such topics as: Business English, the Environment, Health, Lifestyle, Current Issues, Famous People and Gossip, Technology and World News.

Among the recent stories covered on the site is one about a Yemeni-American rapper who Hagage 'AJ' Masaed believes he can help in the fight against terrorism through rap. Check out the story here.

The aim of cdlponline.org is to help adults improve basic skills like reading and spelling using real-life stories on topics of interest to adults. The stories are based on real life situations of interest to adults. Many came from television news stories. The site notes that some of the stories are now more than a year old, however, and things may have changed in that time.

What you do to use the site is to:
1. Pick a topic that you like by clicking on a topic or picture in the top bar of the homepage.
2. Pick a story by clicking on a story name in the list. then
3. Read the story t[if you want to hear the story, you can click the "Listen"]

When you are done reading the story, you click the "Next" button at the bottom of the page to go to learning activities based on the story.

While many sites have information and advice related to the various exams students need to do in order to get into Universites in countres such as Australia, Canada, England and the USA, there are also sites devoted to these exams.

One of these sites is Good Luck IELTS. The makers of this site endevour to show users how they can 'do their best on the day of the IELTS exam'.

The information is divided into three main areas:

There are a number of sites in line that provide videos along with other resources. One site whose main resource are videos in engVid.com. engVid aims to bring its users you free English video lessons every day. Their hope is that users can improve their skills for TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC exams, or just get general English grammar and pronunciation tips.

They have lessons for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced students and cover such topics as business english, grammar, idioms, phrasal verbs, pronunciation, reading, slang, speaking, vocabulary and writing. They also provide tips for their users to improve their English.

The Internet TESL Journal iteslj.org is a monthly web-based journal that began publication in 1995. In addition to publishing articles, it has many activities for students a4esl.org and various things for teachers iteslj.org/t/.

From the main page of the student website - a4esl.org - students can access all the main sub-menus of the site. Both the grammar quizzes and the vocabulary quizzes are sorted into six levels from easy to difficult. The bilingual vocabulary quizzes are sorted by language and the crossword puzzles are sorted into easy and not so easy. For the convenience of visitors who may not be able to use JavaScript or the Flash plugin, there are additional menus listing the quizzes as HTML-only, JavaScript or Flash quizzes.

The BBC World Service's - Learning English site aims to provide "comprehensive materials for intermediate to advanced ESL learners from the BBC World Service".

It uses simplified news stories to present English in context along with extensive audio and video clips. It also provides grammar and vocabulary feedback along with discussion groups and quizzes.

English Online Resources:The Study Zone

Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting information about some of the the English Language learning sites on the web. One such site is the The Study Zone produced by Canada's Victoria University. The Study Zone is for students of the University's English Language Centre (ELC).

The English-language lessons and practice exercises are created by teachers at the ELC. While the site is designed to support their adult English-language learners, all are welcome to read the lessons and try the exercises. Among the links on the sites are those for: Upper Beginner, Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced students .
